Reasons why your heating bills are so high

With outside temperatures dropping during winter, many households experience increased heating bills. Multiple factors can contribute to the energy bill increase. One, your furnace could be working harder to maintain the desired heat to keep you comfortable based on how much temperature changes between your indoor space and the outdoor environment. This could result in increased energy costs. Most people combat chilly winters by adding an extra layer of warm clothing. Be it multiple blankets or different clothes. You will wash more laundry than usual. This means you will use your washers and dryers often, leading to increased energy bills. Poor insulation may also lead to increased energy bills. Older or poorly insulated homes lose heat through drafty doors and leaky windows. As a result, you’ll need to run the heating system more often and at higher temperatures to maintain your indoor temperature at comfortable levels. This increases your energy bills significantly. Another reason why you could be spending a fortune keeping your home heated is your inefficient furnace. If your heating system hasn’t been serviced in a long while or is outdated, it could be working excessively hard to achieve optimal warmth in your home. The expected lifespan of your home furnace is approximately 25 years. If your unit is aging, consider a replacement as it will not be as efficient as it was designed to be. While replacing your furnace might be costly, replacing your low-efficiency unit for a high-efficiency unit will notably reduce your monthly heating bills. Stick to an HVAC maintenance routine to prolong the lifespan of your system. Always have an HVAC professional troubleshoot your HVAC system for carbon monoxide leaks, worn-out parts, dirt, or rust, and repair it. This will keep your home adequately heated and your energy bill stable.

What to consider during HVAC system upgrade

At some point in time, homeowners consider upgrading their current HVAC system.

This desire is more of a need to have a new home appliance as it is an effort to enhance your home’s indoor environment.

It happened to me too. However, upgrading a home’s HVAC system isn’t simple. You have to think it through and find the right models for the upgrades. You also need to get in touch with the right HVAC contractor to work on your HVAC installation. Before then, you have to consider a few tips. First, you need to assess your current HVAC system to determine if it should be replaced or if new HVAC equipment should be added to it. Once you have a clear path, you have to determine your project’s budget. HVA upgrade is not necessarily cheap, more so if you have to replace your entire HVAC system. Purchasing a new HVAC unit requires a significant initial investment. Consult your HVAC supplier to find the most advanced HVAC equipment. After determining your budget, you need to size your home in readiness for an HVAC system installation. Seek the services of an HVAC professional for this since sizing an HVAC unit can be challenging. After finding the right size HVAC unit, visit a heating and AC product supplier to find quality HVAC products. Quality, in this case, is defined by the material of the equipment, energy efficiency of the unit, and life span. Find an HVAC system that can cool and warm your home in summer and winter, respectively, without diminishing its efficiency over time. Finally, the HVAC unit should be better than your current system. It would be best for you to get smart HVAC equipment.

Why should expectant mothers install a quality HVAC system?

External factors contribute significantly to the wellness of a pregnant mother and that of an unborn baby.

The choice and maintenance of your HVAC system will significantly impact your health during pregnancy.

Poor air quality affects women during pregnancy, while some effects appear in babies and older children. According to studies, poor indoor air quality results in low birth weight in babies and aggravates asthma in the mother. It also leads to preterm birth, autism spectrum disorder, miscarriage, and fertility difficulties. A quality HVAC system will remove house dust, leftover cigarette smoke, and chemicals that pollute your home’s indoor air. A low-quality HVAC system might not protect an expectant mother from inhaling toxins from the indoor air. When inhaled, polluted air passes through a pregnant woman’s system to the baby leading to minor respiratory problems, eye irritations, among other issues. An expectant mother should also install a quality HVAC system to help prevent the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and exposure to natural gas from your HVAC system. Install carbon monoxide(CO) alarms in the house to help protect you and the baby. Perform a regular maintenance routine to your HVAC system. Better yet, get an HVAC technician to take care of all the HVAC maintenance routines and fix any natural gas leaks. Additionally, installing a quality HVAC system will filter out pollutants. However, you have to change your HVAC filters regularly to guarantee the supply of clean air in your indoor space for the mother and the unborn baby. Also, good ventilation from your quality HVAC unit lowers indoor air pollution and ensures your home’s indoor air is constantly clean. Lastly, installing a quality HVAC system to control humidity levels at home prevents mildew and mold growth. A quality HVAC system has UVC technology that helps fight against mold, viruses, and bacteria. These HVAC features ensure an expectant mother achieves a safe indoor environment for herself and the unborn baby.

Should HVAC system upgrades be a standard home remodelling for house flippers

Ordinarily, new homeowners always form an opinion about their new home a few days after moving into the place.

If the house has many issues, like HVAC system problems and the quality of the home in general, the new homeowners will not have good things to say about the seller.

Therefore, as a flipper, investing in the right home remodeling project and upgrades will go a long way to ensure your homes are sold quickly. Often, home flippers focus on essential remodeling projects and upgrades. They replace kitchen cabinets, countertops, and appliances. Even though house flippers care about profits, they don’t leave anything to chance while remodeling a home to meet the minimum housing requirements and maintain a good reputation. However, remodeling projects are expensive and don’t guarantee a good ROI. Therefore, the home flipper might not get the most out of a house flipping transaction. Home flippers need to focus on HVAC upgrades to keep home remodeling costs low and maximize investment return. Homebuyers tend to choose homes with better HVAC systems, while homes can sell with a basic HVAC system. For instance, a buyer would go for a home with a smart thermostat and advanced HVAC equipment because of convenience. These upgrades are not necessarily expensive. In fact, when compared to a complete home renovation, a home flipper is likely to save more on remodeling by upgrading an HVAC system and performing minor home improvements. Even though I’m not a home flipper, I used this logic to sell my previous home. I talked to my HVAC contractor and requested an HVAC system upgrade to increase my home’s equity. Luckily, he had experience with this type of home remodeling project. He designed an HVAC installation plan for my home and installed it. I then listed the home in a local home listing, and it was bought after six months.

Looking forward to alone time

My goal is to not need to use a blanket or wear a coat in my own house

My boyfriend works from home and really likes staying at home. I never get to be alone in the house at all. Some women don’t like being left alone because they get lonely, bored or scared. Not me, I want some alone time occasionally. I want to be able to mop my floors without my boyfriend walking through it. I want to choose what I want to watch on TV. I also want to set the thermostat without consulting him first. Basically my boyfriend wants AC all the time and I want heating. It is a constant fight. Someone is either cold or too hot. Nobody is happy. My boyfriend has a golf trip booked with his friends for a long weekend. I am so freaking excited I can hardly contain myself. I already am planning on what I am going to do while he is gone. I am going to get up early so I can work, workout and clean a part of the house. I want to do a deep cleaning. I want to rip my HVAC unit apart and scrub everything. I want to clean inside my kitchen cupboards and wash all the sheets. I also want to crank up the thermostat and enjoy quality heating the whole time. My goal is to not need to use a blanket or wear a coat in my own house. I want to be toasty and watch terribly girly movies on the couch at night. It is going to be four glorious days and three amazing nights to myself.

Forced to set up a home gym

I live in an area where the weather often forces me inside for my workouts.

The winter cold typically lasts for six to eight months, with temperatures below freezing and sometimes down to negative twenty-five degrees.

The snow piles up in feet in a matter of hours. Spring and fall are usually chilly, windy and wet with lots of rain and mud. The summer season is short yet excruciatingly hot and humid. Whenever possible, I try to get outside to run or ride my bicycle for a workout. I like to unroll a yoga mat on my deck and get some fresh air while I go through mountain climbers, burpees, lunges and squats. Unfortunately, the weather rarely cooperates. I’ve needed to figure out ways to burn calories and target strength, stamina and flexibility indoors. Unfortunately, I don’t have a ton of open space in the house and workout equipment is expensive. Because of the location of my house, joining a gym is pretty much impossible. I don’t have time to drive 30 minutes each way. I’ve gradually invested in workout gear for a home gym. I started by buying the less expensive equipment, such as a jump rope, yoga mat, dumbbells and a weighted ball. I finally worked my way up to a treadmill. The treadmill takes up a lot of space and is somewhat of an eyesore but worth it. No matter the weather outside or time of day, I can run, get my heart pumping and work up a sweat. However, running is hard on my knees, ankles and feet. I’m now saving up to purchase a stationary bike. I have no idea where I’m going to put it.

Bike riding is a great workout

Cycling is a great way to work my legs and core and get my heart pumping

My husband and I grew up, raised our kids and spent the first fifty years of our lives in the northeastern part of the country. We got tired of the sub zero temperatures, endless snow accumulation and extremely lengthy winters. We were frustrated with being trapped inside for the majority of the year, reliant on the furnace and wishing our lives away. A little over three years ago, we moved further south. We bought a much smaller house in a location where it never snows. The weather is moderate to hot, and the sun shines nearly every day. For our first Christmas in the new house, my husband bought me a bicycle. It’s a cruiser that allows me to ride on pavement or off-road. I have a sizable basket that allows me to run errands and carry a few groceries. I added a holster on the handlebars for my phone, mount for my water bottle and a wireless speaker. I listen to music while I ride and enjoy a wonderful workout. I make it a point to exercise every day. While I sometimes run, jump rope or lift weights, pedaling my bike is my favorite. I love getting outside and enjoying the fresh air, sunshine and scenery. There’s no impact on my joints and I can increase the effort by switching to a higher gear or pedaling faster. I’m fortunate to have a paved bike path in close proximity to my house that travels 60 miles in either direction. Cycling is a great way to work my legs and core and get my heart pumping. Plus, it puts me in a great mood. At the end of the workout, I always feel happy, accomplished and energized.

Kids keep losing their house keys

My family keeps an extremely hectic schedule.

My husband and I both work very long hours and our three boys are all involved in organized sports. It sometimes seems as if we spend more time away than at home. Although my kids are old enough to get off the bus and spend a few hours at home alone, I worry about them. I stress over their safety, security and the possibility of them breaking the rules. They are supposed to come straight home after school or their various practices. They are not allowed to bring friends home when their father or I aren’t there to supervise. They have been instructed to keep the doors locked. We had some problems because my boys kept forgetting or losing their keys to the house. They’d get off the bus and have no way to get inside. Either my husband and I would need to leave work to let them in, or the kids would walk to the neighbor’s house. We tried hiding an extra key in various places, but this key kept getting misplaced. I finally started looking into alternatives and came across wireless security systems. With a basic and fairly inexpensive package, we now have automated door locks and cameras. We’re able to lock and unlock the doors through an app on our phones. I get notified and reassured when the boys arrive home, get inside and lock up. I can also verify their arrival by way of real time video. The security system has set my mind at ease and added a lot of convenience.

Integrated Building Automation

Security as part of home automation system

I live in an area that experiences every type of weather extreme.

We deal with temperatures down to twenty-five below zero in the winter and into the upper eighties in the summer.

We’re very familiar with snow, sleet, torrential downpours, hail, high winds and brutal humidity. The weather causes a lot of damage, work and expense. I’m always looking for ways to trim costs and protect my home. When I decided to install a smart thermostat, I got interested in home automation systems. A smart home provides a single hub to control a wide variety of appliances and systems, such as lighting, room temperature, water temperature, sump pumps and even the washer, dryer and oven. There is the ability to include all sorts of safety and security features. There are now sensors for just about everything. Along with smoke, fire and carbon monoxide detection, there are sensors for flood, moisture, occupancy, motion, glass breakage and doors and windows opening or closing. I’ve invested in cameras that provide a very clear video of anyone who enters the driveway, steps on the porch or knocks on the door. Whether I’m at home, at work or half a world away on vacation, I can see and converse with the person. I even have the ability to remotely lock and unlock on the door. Through the home automation program, I can turn lights on and off to make it appear as if someone is home. Plus, the system recognizes the location of my family members through GPS on our phones. It automatically reacts and makes adjustments when we arrive home.

Steadily upgrading apartments

Between graduating college and buying my own home, I spent five years renting various apartments.

I started out with very little money, struggling to come up with the security deposit and to pay the rent.

My first apartment was extremely small and rundown. It was located in a sketchy neighborhood, and I couldn’t wait to get out of there. The floors were slanted, the windows painted shut and none of the appliances worked properly. Despite the limited square footage, heating and cooling cost me a fortune. The door didn’t lock securely and someone broke in while I was out for the evening and stole my laptop. As soon as I could afford it, I moved into a nicer apartment. This one was actually the ground floor of an older house that had been converted into rental apartments. I liked having hardwood floors, big windows, high ceilings and a wide front porch. The drawbacks of an old house are not enough power outlets, ineffective heating, no air conditioning and no off-street parking. I felt safe there but was still anxious to upgrade to a better apartment. Once I started making more money, I moved into an apartment complex with all of the conveniences and amenities. It was a huge building and property with eight floors and multiple elevators. Within my apartment I had a washer and dryer, stainless steel appliances, two full bathrooms, zone control and a balcony overlooking the courtyard. I had access to a fitness room, giant swimming pool, hot tub and barbecue grills. It was expensive and noisy, but I really enjoyed living there.
