Have you looked in a PC book lately?

I was in a mad search to find the PC number for our Heating and A/C corporation.

I knew the name of the corporation, however I couldn’t find a company card to go with it.

I looked in every beach house PC and address book that I could find, however I couldn’t find it. I ripped our desk apart, trying to find the company card I knew I had kept from last year. I found a section I thought was for H’s which would help me find the Heating and A/C companies. When I found the Heating and A/C section, there was a reference to searching for heating, ventilation and air conditioner. I moved forward to the section it referred me to only to find there were quite a few Heating and A/C companies, however I couldn’t learn the numbers unless I had a magnifying glass. I knew our eyup were getting bad, however I didn’t know they had become this bad. I called our daughter into the room and asked her to look at the numbers for me. She grabbed the magnifying glass and found the number I was looking for. My daughter laughed at me when I just sat there looking at her with our head hung low. She handed me the card for the Heating and A/C corporation that had been on our desk. She told me I wasn’t losing our eyupight, however I had too much clutter on our desk. The people I was with and I both laughed as she walked away so I could get to our call.. I could finally call the Heating and A/C corporation and get our Heating and A/C repair tied up before the next big storm hit.

I was seeing for our Heating, Ventilation and A/C serviceman.

Last week, I had to have an Heating, Ventilation and A/C serviceman to check out our a/c unit.

It was just a familiar service inspection, however I wasn’t able to find the time in our labor schedule to take off the time to be at the house.

I offered the key to our buddy and told his that if the Heating, Ventilation and A/C tech needed to get into the house. I offered his a check to pay the bill and I went to work. When I got home, I went right over to our neighbor’s. I wanted to know how much it had cost myself and others and know if there were any concerns with the a/c ? She looked at myself and others kind of oddly, and told myself and others the Heating, Ventilation and A/C serviceman never showed up. I couldn’t guess it, and I apologized for leaving so abruptly, however I wanted to call the Heating, Ventilation and A/C company before they closed. I finally got in touch with the Heating, Ventilation and A/C operator and told them our problem. They insisted the Heating, Ventilation and A/C serviceman had been there,, and they even pulled out his labor order. When they asked the address, the guy groaned. They had transposed more than one of the numbers and sent him to a odd address. She wanted to set up another appointment, and I told his it had to be on a Tuesday so I didn’t need to take off work. I got our Tuesday appointment and I sat there and waited. When the Heating, Ventilation and A/C tech hadn’t shown up by noon, I made the PC call again. She told myself and others he was on the way.

Winter had me worried.

I’m not someone who ever worried about the weather. I could always find the fun in being outside, regardless of it raining, snowing, cold, or sizzling. I enjoyed being outdoors. Then I ended up having the flu. Suddenly, I was sicker than I had ever been in my life. I laid in bed shivering. My head was pounding. I had a fever of 104 and I couldn’t breathe. It didn’t matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to shake the flu once it took hold of me. I had the heating system running, and it was only the end of October. When I realized that it ‘was’ only the end of October, I wondered if there was a complication with my heating system. I knew I should have been much warmer than I was. With Winter coming hastily, I was start to worry. I already knew I had to have the servicing done, however I wanted to wait until I was feeling better. If I waited another month or more, it would already be getting close to when both of us had the first freeze in our area. I didn’t want to wait that long. I decided to call the Heating, Ventilation and A/C supplier and make an appointment. I called my Dad for the number of the Heating, Ventilation and A/C supplier she had always used. Once I got in touch with the Heating, Ventilation and A/C corporation, I explained my situation. I only had to wait numerous afternoons for them to come out and look at my heating system. I had a problem, but it wasn’t with the heating system. They told me that I had not changed the temperature control from air conditioner to heating.

Have you looked in a phone book lately?

I was in a mad search to find the phone number for my Heating, Ventilation and A/C corporation. I knew the name of the corporation, however I couldn’t find a company card to go with it. Scent of Symmetry

The topic of odors and the sense of smell is a fascinating one.

Some studies have shown that the body scent of men who have greater body bilateral symmetry are rated as more attractive by the average woman who is not using contraceptives.

That certainly explains why I couldn’t get a date in high school with my highly asymmetric form. Odors have been classified as musky (perfumes), pungent (vinegar), floral (flowers), pepperminty (mints), ethereal (gasoline), camphoraceous (mothballs), and putrid (rotten eggs). There is also a rating scale ranging from 0 (no odor) to 6 with a level 1 being the odor threshold and 6 being intolerable. Homeowners with HVAC systems may be tempted to add some new odor classifications. There is the “ozoney” odor created by an electrical shortage or a unit that is overheating because of blocked airflow from a filter that needs to be replaced. Firing up a furnace that has been idle for some time could result in a “dusty” smell. The most common HVAC odor is, unfortunately, “musty” instead of “musky”. These are the smells that mold and mildew can produce when the condensate from the AC unit is not drained properly. The most dangerous odor is the putrid smell of rotten eggs. A trace amount of mercaptan, a chemical that contains smelly sulfur compounds, is deliberately added to odorless natural gas to alert people of leaks from gas-fueled furnaces. If you smell this, open your windows and doors, turn off the gas valve to the house if you can, and call your HVAC service company as soon as possible. If the HVAC technician that arrives has a symmetrical build, be sure your wife has an errand to run during the service call.

Rub-a-Dub-Dub

I could never make any sense out of the children’s nursery rhyme “Rub-a-Dub-Dub”.

Specifically, how did three tradesmen end up together in a bathtub lost in the sea? My “research” led me to the original rhyme from the 14th century where instead of men in the tub, there was a trio of maids presumably unclothed.

The three tradesmen were naturally curious and were caught ogling the maids much to the chagrin of “respectable” society. The “Rub-a-Dub-Dub” may have been the 14th century way of saying “Tsk Tsk” to show societal disapproval. I believe that the nursery rhyme illustrates a unique problem that could exist in a modern air-conditioned shopping center where a meat shop, a bakery, and a place that sells scented candles and greeting cards have conflicting HVAC needs. The meat shop requires a cooler temperature to prevent spoilage after a side of beef leaves the “cold room” at about 34°F until the chopped and ground products are wrapped for the buyer. The baker’s hot ovens will conflict with the butcher’s needs and the aromas of the scented candles will compete with the delicious odors from the cakes and bread fresh out of the baker’s ovens. And, if the cold air from the meat shop mixes with the warm air from the bakery, condensate could cause the greeting cards in the candle shop to warp. The three businesses will be “out to sea” about a solution until they consult with an HVAC professional to solve the dilemma. This could involve the use of spot zone cooling for the bakery, maintaining a slight positive pressure to stop odors from outside entering the stores, or a more effective vent system to control humidity and temperature in the butcher shop and candle store.

The Third Rail of DIY

Almost every article written on home improvement ends up with the advice to hire a professional to do the job correctly or face dire consequences.

My question is: Why is it necessary to write the article in the first place if someone else is going to do the job? Many tasks can be a “Do It Yourself” or DIY project even for those who don’t know the difference between a box wrench and an adjustable wrench.

Fixing a leaky faucet is easy if you remember to turn off the water before starting. People paint, build bookcases, and some even change the oil in their car if they are too cheap to go to a quick-oil-change place. The term “third-rail issue” applies to a controversial subject that no politician will “touch” lest they face political damage. In the realm of DIY, that third-rail issue is HVAC but there are a few things that can be done without the help of a qualified HVAC professional. Changing filters is one task, keeping leaves and debris away from the outdoor condenser unit is another. Gentle rinsing of the condenser fins will improve your HVAC performance and unplugging a condenser drain line are tasks that even a mechanical klutz can perform. The problem is that once some people get a tool in their hands and realize that they can save money with a DIY HVAC repair, the urge to start attacking hose clamps, screws, nuts, and bolts becomes too great to resist. The result is those dire consequences mentioned earlier. This article will, of course, conclude by advising homeowners to let a professional HVAC technician make any repairs. Any DIY effort without the correct tools may end up costing you dearly.

I Saved My Money For a Smart Thermostat

I spent a few months saving my money for a smart thermostat.

My HVAC technician constantly told me how much he loved smart thermostats and was always telling me how it would lower my utility bills.

When he first mentioned a smart thermostat to me, I assumed he was trying to sell me something in order to make more money. However, after I did my own research, I realized that my HVAC technician wasn’t lying. Smart thermostats were designed to lower energy costs because they were programmable. A smart thermostat could pick up on a home’s heating and air preferences according to the time of day and then automatically set itself accordingly. It could also be connected to a cell phone, which allowed homeowners to change the temperature wherever and whenever they wanted. The app for the cell phone also displayed the temperature and humidity levels outside. I loved these features, however my favorite feature of the smart thermostat was the way it showed how efficient or inefficient the HVAC system was running. This feature was fantastic because it pointed out the ways homeowners could improve their heat and air settings. I knew I wanted to install a smart thermostat after learning about them, but I had to spend a few months saving for it. Smart thermostats are more expensive than your average thermostat, but they paid themselves off in the long run. I’m glad my HVAC technician kept telling me about the wonders of a smart thermostat! I wouldn’t have learned about their greatness if it weren’t for him.

Enjoying the air conditioning in winter.

Winter had started early last year and was bitter to even the heartiest Northerner. My husband and I were ready to trade the heating in for air conditioning and head for a tropical vacation. And we did. We both work online, so we took our work with us. So, a few days after Christmas, we took an overheated but cheap flight that we had found online to a tropical destination few people had heard of yet. It was great to get away from the ice and snow and be at a place where you actually need to run the air conditioning to be comfortable. Never in my life have I been in a situation where I had to run the air conditioning in winter. It was amazing. We had a wonderful time. We are early risers and we chose that time to get our work done. We had both lightened our work load for that week so we didn’t spend too much time on work. After working a few hours, we would go out to eat and go for a walk to find some entertainment, usually air conditioned. Even though it was winter, it was still pretty warm in those parts. Fortunately, there was plenty of shade and things to do in the historic downtown area. We spent the hot afternoons in air conditioned museums, art galleries and theaters before heading to the beach in the late afternoon and early evening. After a few hours of beach going, outdoor dining and walking, I was more than ready to go back to the motel room, find a movie and soak up the a/c. I really hope we take another working vacation there again this year.

I really hate being overheated.

I hate doing my Christmas shopping at the mall

I don’t mind the cold that much, but I hate being overheated. That’s why I am rarely seen in public in the winter wearing my winter coat. Oh, I’ll put it on before I leave the house and keep it on in the car, with the heater on low. But, I will take it off before I go into a public store or restaurant. I wasn’t always that way. Years ago, as soon as I entered a store or restaurant in the winter, I would take off my winter coat and get stuck holding and carrying the bulky thing. So, now I just leave it in the car. Sure, it’s a cold walk from my heated car to whatever heated store or restaurant that I am going to, but at least I won’t get overheated. I know these stores and restaurants want their customers to be comfortable, but, in my opinion, most turn their thermostats up to high. Most of the customers are dressed for the cold weather and I know that I am not the only one that gets overheated in public places during the winter. I keep my own heat at home on 66 degrees, and while I don’t suggest the stores and restaurants do that, they certainly don’t need to put the heat on 85, which sometimes it feels like. I hate doing my Christmas shopping at the mall. While the mall walkways and hallways are usually comfortable, the stores are often hot and stuffy. Even without my winter coat, I get overheated. Seriously, why do they have to turn the heat up so high?
