We never were adopted and I had to be on my way as soon as I turned 18. My brother was a year younger than me, and I told him that I would be there to get him when he got out too. Fortunately when I was on my own, I worked hard and eventually made enough money to attend a trade school. I became a certified HVAC expert and I worked hard to save money. I ended up getting a nice apartment by the time my brother was out of the orphanage and I was there for him the day he turned 18 and we celebrated his birthday! He said it was the best birthday he ever had, and I was able to get him into the same trade school I went to so he could join me working in the HVAC industry.

It was a sad time for us all, but I can’t even imagine how our mother was able to carry on. She worked at a local soup exchange. Of course I can’t really compare well because I haven’t been to many orphanages, but it was pretty bad.

We were starved if we didn’t behave up to standard, and that was a high standard. You could actually miss a meal if you didn’t fold your bed the right way and all the corners had to be perfect! I remember crying one night because there was a tiny wrinkle in my blanket and I was very hungry. Fortunately, a buddy of mine brought me half a biscuit to hold me over and that was very thoughtful of him. I remember praying many nights that I would get out of that place soon, and it was strange because one night there was an explosion. The whole place caught on fire and we rushed to get out to safety while we watched the place burning down even while the fire dept was working hard to put out the fire. I heard that the AC system blew up because it didn’t have enough maintenance or something like that. I could believe it, I hardly ever saw any HVAC professionals come out to the place. So the new orphanage my buddy and I were transferred to was something else. They actually were nice at this place and they had reasonable temperature control settings. The beds were comfortable with nice mattresses and it was clean inside. We weren’t punished severely for petty issues and we always had good food. My buddy and I ended up being adopted by a family who thought we were cute together. We said we were brothers and so they took us both in. We have always been inseparable since way back and even to this day, we both work as HVAC professionals. We are planning to start our own business together eventually.

We actually had to go into the woods all the time to collect wood, take down trees and split them up to have a constant supply of firewood, otherwise we wouldn’t make it through the winter months. We barely had enough money to get enough groceries to put food on the table. And for special occasions, we went to a local soup kitchen where they had the most delicious soup around. I loved going to the soup kitchen especially in the warmer season because they had air conditioning and that was definitely a special treat for us. The bread was always freshly baked and it came with the meal, and it was always filling. Of course, we couldn’t afford to eat like that all the time, but we were really happy when we were able to eat out sometimes like that. Sometimes if we were lucky, the owners would bake apple cobbler which was a specialty of theirs. Sometimes, they would even give us a scoop of vanilla ice cream to go on top, that was a delight! While it’s true that we lived poor lives coming up, us kids managed to get into some good careers and now are living well. Anyway, our parents taught us that it’s not really money that makes you rich, but the good deeds in your heart and the loved ones in your life that give you a fulfilling life. They are right too, I get more pleasure from helping others in life than trying to become a rich person and show off what I have.
