I have a nice little computer room in my house.

I kind of think of it as a getaway from the common everyday world where I can disappear into cyber world and do the hobbies I like to do online.

However there was a small problem with this computer room in the winter months. It would get pretty darn cold. Even with my central heating system running. For some reason the computer room would not retain the heat from the central heating. So I went out and I bought a really nice gas fireplace for the room. I wanted to go with a gas fireplace rather than a cheap portable space heater because I wanted to give the room some decoration. I really love the blue flame that comes from the gas fireplace. It is really nice to have running with the lights off and just the computer screen light at night. I know it may sound a little dangerous to have a gas form of heating in such a small room. But I am always on top of my gas fireplace and know just how to take care of it so it is always one hundred and ten percent safe. It will never become a danger so long as I take care of my gas fireplace properly and never forget to do the maintenance on it that needs to be done, when it needs to be done. Portable space heaters may be for some, but for me I prefer things to look pretty. A plain old portable space heater would not have given me that pretty essence.

When you buy something like a portable space heater or a portable air conditioning system, the last thing you expect is for them to be noisy. Well, this was unfortunately the case with both the portable air conditioning system and portable space heater I bought for my home. I found myself not being able to use them at night while I was trying to sleep because they were way too noisy when they would turn on and off. So I could only use them in the day time hours to reduce the use of my central heating and air conditioning system unit. In the day and evening while I am awake and at home, I will turn off the thermostat completely and have just the portable space heater or portable air conditioning system running, depending on the time of year it is of course. My original plan though was to run the portable space heater and the portable air conditioning system at night while I was sleeping to cut back on energy use of the central heating and air conditioning system unit. I am not sure if it is the brand of portable HVAC equipment I bought that makes the difference with the noise level of these things or not, but it is something I may look into at some point when I have some time to read more information about heating and air conditioning products that are portable online. The answer has got to be out there somewhere! Until then, I will keep things as they are.

The HVAC technology since back when has advanced so much and it is a true godsend! Like I said, I am not sure what I would do without my central heating system and my humidifier. It is pretty strange that when it is hot out in the summer and dry, my hands and skin do not crack up like that. I guess it is just the mystery of the human body!

This is just the way my body reacts. So because of this factor, every single winter I always make sure my home is heated really well. Either through my central heating system or from the multiple amounts of portable space heaters I have around here. I sort of alternate between both the central heating system and the portable space heaters because I try to save on energy use when it is so cold out that you need to be running the heater twenty four hours a day and seven days per week. Central heating in itself sometimes does not warm my home enough because of how cold it gets. And this would require me to really crank the heating system. However this would make it so that I am pretty much paying a fortune in energy use. So this is where the portable space heaters that I have come into play. I have a portable space heater for each and every room in my house to act the same way as the central heating system would. It creates whole home heating for me with all of these portable space heaters. And this is what I need when it is this cold to avoid those headaches that the freezing cold ends up giving me every single year. It helps with the energy bills as well. So just food for thought…if you have a cold climate, try buying a bunch of portable space heaters to save on energy use of your central heating and air conditioning system during this time.

It costs them nothing to heat their home, use the oven and run the hot water heater. Since we live in an area that is well-known for our extreme winter weather, this is very advantageous. It costs my husband and I a small fortune to heat our house. We set the thermostat as low as possible and bundle up in layers of sweaters in an attempt to reduce the strain on our budget. My in-laws take full advantage of their free gas. The whole family gathers at their house for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We all have learned to wear shorts and tank tops. It doesn’t matter what the outside weather is, the house will be horribly overheated. My mother and father-in-law have no qualms about turning the thermostat up to 85 degrees. It’s so hot that everyone is wet with sweat within ten minutes of arriving. We all fight over who gets to take out the garbage just for the chance to step outside. We try to open a window without letting my in-laws notice. The fresh air is such a relief. My mother-in-law always catches me and shuts the window. She gets upset that I’m letting the heat escape. She says it forces the furnaces to work harder. If she’s so concerned with wear and tear on the heating system, I would think she’d lower the thermostat to a tolerable setting. It’s absolutely bizarre that we arrive in wool coats and snow boots and are forced to strip down because it’s so stinking hot at her house.

He constantly begs me to come visit him for the holidays. He insists that a white Christmas is ideal. I finally gave in and bought a plane ticket this past December. I packed a suitcase with my warmest clothes. As soon as we stepped outside the airport terminal, I knew I’d made a huge mistake. I immediately wanted to go back home. The temperature was twenty-eight degrees. While the snow was certainly beautiful, I didn’t appreciate my wet feet. I also kept slipping and sliding on the icy pavement and tugging a wheeled suitcase through the slush was difficult. We then sat in my brother’s freezing cold car for approximately ten minutes waiting for the heater to provide enough warmth to melt the ice on the windshield. My brother finally had to get out and chisel the ice away with a scraper. Despite the heater blasting at maximum capacity during the drive to his house, I shivered the whole time. I couldn’t wait to get inside. However, my brother likes to save money whenever possible. He’d turned his thermostat way down before heading to the airport. His house was so cold that I could see my breath. I kept my coat on and stood directly in front of a heater vent, trying to thaw out. I was thankful for the heated blanket on the bed. While my brother wanted to take me skiing, sledding and go for walks in the snow, I just wanted to hide inside and stay as close as possible to his furnace. Whenever he wasn’t paying attention, I raised the thermostat setting.
