Moving in the Wintertime

I don’t believe that there is a single person on this planet who enjoys the process of relocating, but when you have to pack up all of your belongings, put them in boxes, and relocate them across any distance things get undoubtedly chaotic and tumultuous, it’s even worse if you are traveling across states or differing climate conditions.

I feel this is something that I completely forgot about when I was arranging my most recent move.

In my climate, the winter air temperature is typically mild and comfortable, and you can easily wear a sweatshirt everyday and turn off your central heating, cooling, and ventilations entirely. You actually don’t have to worry about operating a forced air oil furnace or a powerful cooling system because you can rely on natural ventilation for the entire winter. However, I never considered that I was going to be moving to a very different climate. In fact, I was going to be relocating my stuff to a snowy, icy, cold region of the country. I did not even realize that I had made this fatal flaw till I started driving in the moving truck towards my final endpoint and snow started hitting the windshield. I certainly had to turn on the heater in the truck and it was having a hard time keeping up with the cold air that surrounded us. When I finally reached my new home, I didn’t even want to get out of the warm vehicle. It was so cold outside that I did not think I could carry a single box without getting frostbite. Three weeks later, the moving truck is still resting in the driveway and I have not left the central oil furnace.

Moving in the winter

I think there is not a single person on this planet who enjoys the process of relocating, but when you have to pack up all of your belongings, put them in boxes, and move them across any distance.

Things get actually chaotic and tumultuous.

It’s even worse if you are traveling across states or differing weather conditions. I think this is something that I completely forgot about when I was arranging my most recent move. In my weather conditions, the winter time air temperature is always extremely mild and comfortable, but you can actually wear a sweatshirt everyday and turn off your central heating, cooling, and ventilations entirely. You do not have to worry about operating a forced air gas furnace or a powerful cooling unit because you can rely on natural ventilation for the entire winter season, however, I never considered that I was going to be moving to cold weather conditions. In fact, I was going to be relocating my stuff to a snowy, icy, chilly freezing region of the country. I did not even realize that I had made this fatal flaw till I started driving in the moving truck towards my final endpoint and snow started hitting the windshield. I absolutely had to turn on the heating unit in the truck and it was having a tough time keeping up with the freezing air that surrounded us. When I finally reached my new home, I didn’t even want to get out of the warm vehicle. It was so freezing outside that I did not think I could carry a single box without getting frostbite. Three weeks later, the moving truck is still sitting in the driveway and I haven’t left the central heating system.

Moving in the winter

I don’t think there is a single person on this planet who enjoys the process of moving, but when you have to pack up all of your belongings, put them in boxes, and relocate them across any distance, then things get truly chaotic and tumultuous, and it’s even worse if you are traveling across states or differing weather conditions. I recognize this is something that I completely forgot about when I was arranging my most recent move. In my weather conditions, the winter time air temperature is always seriously mild and comfortable. You can really wear a sweatshirt everyday and turn off your central heating, cooling, and ventilations entirely. You absolutely don’t have to worry about operating a forced air gas furnace or a powerful cooling system because you can rely on natural ventilation for the entire winter! However, I never considered that I was going to be moving to truly different weather conditions. In fact, I was going to be relocating my stuff to a snowy, icy, cold region of the country. I did not even realize that I had made this fatal flaw till I started driving in the moving truck towards my final destination and snow started hitting the windshield. I really had to turn on the heater in the truck and it was having a hard time keeping up with the cold air that surrounded us. When I finally reached my new home, I didn’t even want to get out of the warm vehicle. It was so cold outside that I did not think I could carry a single box without getting frostbite. I believe there is not a single person on this planet who enjoys the process of relocating. When you have to pack up all of your belongings, put them in boxes, and relocate them across any distance, things get legitimately chaotic and tumultuous, then it’s even worse if you are traveling across states or differing temperature conditions. I believe this is something that I completely forgot about when I was arranging our most recent move. In my temperatures, the winter air temperature is always extremely mild and comfortable! You can wear a sweatshirt everyday and turn off your central heating, cooling, and ventilation entirely. You really do not have to worry about operating a forced air oil furnace or a powerful cooling method because you can rely on natural ventilation for the entire winter season, however, I never considered that I was going to be moving to a legitimately cold temperature. In fact, I was going to be relocating my stuff to a snowy, icy, frigid region of the country. I did not even realize that I had made this fatal flaw till I started driving in the moving truck towards my final destination and snow started hitting the windshield. I absolutely had to turn on the heating system in the truck and it was having a hard time keeping up with the cold air that surrounded us. When you have to pack up all of your belongings, put them in boxes, and relocate them across any distance…

Things get very chaotic and tumultuous. It’s even worse if you are traveling across states or differing climate conditions. I guess this is something that I completely forgot about when I was arranging my most recent move. In my climate, the winter air temperature is always extremely mild and comfortable. You can easily wear a sweatshirt everyday and turn off your central heating, cooling, and ventilations this done entirely. You really don’t have to worry about operating a forced air furnace or a powerful cooling system because you can rely on natural ventilation for the entire winter season. Saying Goodbye to the Hole in my Wall is Bittersweet

I recently decided to take advantage of rising home prices and sell my house.

I am hoping to sell now when prices are high, continue renting for a while, and then buy again when the prices fall again, as they invariably will. Well, I have two old window a/c units that do not sit in windows at my house. They were installed into the exterior walls of the house many years ago, and they have remained there, unused, even though the house has had central heating and cooling for about three decades now. I never saw the need to get rid of the window a/c units, and in fact, they sometimes came in handy when I needed to get the HVAC system worked on or it was 110 degrees outside and the regular a/c needed a little help. But the realtor says I must get rid of them because it makes buyers wonder if the central heating and cooling system is inadequate or unreliable. Since neither is true, I guess I need to say goodbye to my window air conditioners, and that means saying goodbye to the holes in the walls, as well. I never really wanted to bother with the a/c units because I didn’t want to have to bother with the resultant holes, but I guess I just have to at this point. I am trying to decide if I should just fill them in with more wall material or if I should turn them into windows. They are placed really high on the walls, so windows might look a bit odd. In any event, I will miss the little window air conditioners.

Stop turning the thermostat so low

I don’t know how many times I have explained this to my wife: if you turn the thermostat down too low it wont work. Whenever we get home from work we turn on the air conditioner. If I get home first I set the thermostat to about 73 degrees and then the house is cool and comfortable for my wife when she gets home. However, if she gets home first she sets the thermostat down to about 40 degrees and then she wonders why the air conditioner isn’t working. I have one of those older, dial, thermostats. The HVAC system in the house is not the original HVAC system. However, the dial thermostat very well might be. It works great so I have never had cause to replace it. The only issue is that if you turn the thermostat down 50 degrees, it doesn’t know what to do so it just does nothing. This has never been a problem for me. After all, it is not like the house cools down any faster at 40 degrees than it does at 74. The house cools down just as fast if you set the thermostat to an actually comfortable setting. In fact, it cools down faster at a normal setting because the air conditioner actually kicks on. It doesn’t if you set it too low. At this point I don’t know what to do except maybe buy a wifi thermostat. I understand that those can be pre-programmed. Then the house could just be cooled already for us by the time we get home. No matter who gets home first.

New kitty means new heating and cooling

My uncle was super excited when he finally got central heating and cooling in his old house. He has lived in that house for over 50 years and never had a reliable source of heat or cooling. Instead, he just used portable convection heaters and a window air conditioning unit or two. I wouldn’t have been able to live like that but he seemed happy enough. But recently, my uncle took in a stray kitten. We were all surprised that he did that. After all, he never had a pet before and he didn’t seem very fond of them. I guess he couldn’t resist when the kitten was under his porch crying. He said he planned to turn it over to animal control in the morning but then he just couldn’t. Well, with a cat in the house portable heaters can be a bit dangerous. There are portable heaters that turn themselves off if the kitty pushed it over but my uncle wanted to make sure his new kitty would stay warm and safe while he was at work. So he finally got central heating and cooling. It is about time. I am happy that my uncle can finally live in the 21st century where we have modern appliances like central heating and cooling. His HVAC system even has a smart thermostat. So, I guess my uncle is even more advanced than me now. He said he likes the smart thermostat because he can tell what temperature the house is even when he’s at work. I think he really loves that kitten; even if he won’t admit it.

Heat pump maintenance

My mom loves her air conditioning

My mom never ever turns off her air conditioner.

That thing runs 24/7 365 days a year.

The only time it is ever off is twice a year when she has her air conditioner maintenance done. Otherwise, the air conditioner is blasting away and keeping her cool all of the time. I can’t say that I blame my mom. She worked over 40 years as a landscaper for a very busy company. This meant 10-12 hour days of cutting lawns, trimming trees, and stuff like that. This far south, it is almost always hot. So, now that my mom is retired, she swore she would never let herself get hot again. Thllkll k k k n k at is why it was such a shame when her air conditioner broke down suddenly in the middle of August. My mom called me up in a panic and said that it was hot in her house and getting hotter. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong with the thermostat but the air conditioner simply wouldn’t kick on. I did what any son would do, I told her to call up her trusty air conditioning provider. Of course, she had already done that and they were already on their way. She just wanted to complain to me I guess. Her birthday is coming up and I have been wondering what to get her. I think I will get her a portable air conditioner for emergencies such as this one. True, this hasn’t happened before, but I bet she would like a portable air conditioner anyway. She could always use it in front of the couch to stay extra cool.

The boiler turned out to be awesome

When I first moved into my home I wasn’t pleased by the boiler system in the basement.

It was big, ugly and took up so much space.

The boiler required metal grates in my living room floor. The idea is that the heat would rise from the boiler in the basement and then warm my living room and kitchen. I didn’t like the look of it at all. I am thankful though that I had other things on my mind. My house had bees nests in the walls that I needed to take care of. I also had a severely outdated kitchen. Those things took precedent over a heating system I didn’t like. I ended up having a full year in the house before I was financially able to remove and pay for a different heating system. After a year of using the boiler and enjoying its benefits, I no longer wanted to replace it. Yes, it is big and ugly but it is mine. The boiler system is so powerful. My living room and kitchen are toasty warm when my system operates. I also realized that I can use the boiler as a hot water heater if I wanted to. Recently I learned that if I ever put in a pool, the boiler can serve as a pool heater. It can even have piping attached to it that extends underneath my blacktop and be a snowmelt system for my driveway. How exciting is that? My favorite thing about the boiler is how durable it is. No maintenance, heater repairs or any though and my system just keeps running.
