I spent a decade or more sort of planning our move to the south.

• I moved to part time work about ten years ago.

This gave me plenty of time to scheme while the gas furnace was blasting away. Our entire adult life had been spent with the gas furnace blasting away for at least six months or more. Sure, that region has a pretty spring and a fairly comfortable summer. But as the fall colors are starting to be a part of our focus, the gas furnace is kicking on again. My plan was to ditch the HVAC heating and head south to the sunshine. Yet, it took some work to get my husband on board as he’s sort of loathe to change. However, I kept chipping away and we finally found the spot where we would trade our gas furnace for a whole bunch of HVAC cooling. It was only a few years later that we bought a place. I even coordinated getting the HVAC equipment and the kitchen on our old house upgraded so we got a fabulous price for our family home. With some of those profits, I had a sunroom added to back of the house. This was the crowning jewel of my decade worth of planning, cajoling and executing a plan. But what I didn’t realize that first year was the summer heat and humidity made the sunroom virtually unusable. However, a quick call to the HVAC company changed all of that. They installed a ductless heat pump inside the sunroom. That was all it took. The ductless heat pump makes for such wonderful HVAC cooling that I can get air conditioning and sun at once.

Perhaps had I actually read the HVAC warranty, I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in now.

No, when the HVAC company installed the new HVAC equipment 7 years ago, I was too excited about the great heating and cooling to worry about a warranty. Thankfully, my wife listened to the HVAC contractor and she at least got the HVAC warranty registered with the factory. There was only a 90 day window to do so. Had that been up to me, I would have voided the HVAC warranty right then. But, it would take seven more years before I did that. And again, all it would have taken would have been a quick skim over the warranty to understand the conditions. Instead, I was ecstatic about the new HVAC equipment and eventually just sort forgot about all of that stuff. So when I came home one day to find the air conditioner running but very little cool air coming out, I thought I might be able to do something about it. That was my crucial mistake. Had I bothered to read the HVAC warranty, I would have known that only licensed, certified HVAC professionals were allowed to work on the HVAC unit. But that didn’t happen so I ended up blundering around as though I had some sort on intuitive HVAC maintenance training. The fact is, I can’t even change my own oil in the car. Why I figured I could fix a complicated piece of HVAC technology is beyond me still. When the HVAC company finally came out and saw what I had done, they informed me of the bad news. I had caused thousands of dollars of damage to the HVAC equipment and in the process, I voided the warranty on the HVAC equipment.

Okay so there wasn’t a time this past year when I had even the mildest of cold or flu feelings that I didn’t almost freak out.

That had a lot to do with a pandemic that was keeping me inside the safety of my HVAC maintained home. There wasn’t a stray sneeze or a tickle in my throat that didn’t go unnoticed. Thankfully, I made it to the point where I could be vaccinated and worry a lot less. I’m just really thankful I found the source of the near constant sniffles I had prior to a pandemic breaking out. Otherwise, I know I would have freaked out. A couple of years ago, my wife finally made me go to the doctor after I had complained of respiratory symptoms for more than a month. It was by no means overwhelming but I just felt bad and was always fighting sinus issues or other related symptoms. I figured I’d just get a prescription and that would be the end of it. What I got instead was a suggestion to call the HVAC company. My doctor thought my problems stemmed from poor indoor air quality. And a ductwork cleaning might resolve the situation. I was a bit skeptical but I did exactly as my doctor advised. The HVAC professionals came out and did the ductwork cleaning followed by the ductwork sealing. It wasn’t but a day or two later that all of those ongoing symptoms just went away. Thankfully, this happened before the pandemic. Having cleaner indoor air also helped my immune response strengthen as well. And it was a good year to have a stronger immune system for sure.

I am in better health than I was a year ago. That’s saying something given the fact that I spent the better part of the past year stuck inside the air conditioning of my home. Like many others, I had to follow all the Covid protocols very closely as my health and age put me at a much greater risk. Perhaps that was the motivation to get healthier and more fit. Or maybe it was just the fact that life slowed down a bit. It started with me simply getting out of the heating and cooling comfort of my house for walks. This turned into more and varied exercises. Before I knew it, we had turned the guest room into a home office and home gym hybrid. My wife was thrilled. Then I learned a bit more about how the HVAC in my home could help me be even healthier. And it wasn’t going to take much effort or cost me a ton of money either. Once I learned about the connection between HVAC and air quality, I made the change. All it took was replacing the HVAC air filter. Instead of the cheap air filters I had purchased for decades, I went with a HEPA filter. For some reason, I didn’t understand that those old paper HVAC air filters are not filtering the air for us. No, those air filters exist for the health and wellbeing of the HVAC equipment. The HEPA filter looks after us by trapping and removing over 99 percent of all airborne contaminants. That means a lot less strain on our immune response since our respiratory system isn’t always under attack.

Perhaps this is a sign of things to come or maybe it’s just another example of the desperation of some criminals. I really don’t know. But I’ve recently take steps to not be victimized by these very specific thieves. Still, I never thought I would have to lock down my HVAC equipment. That’s just one thing that really never occurred to me. I certainly don’t take my HVAC unit for granted. My wife and I spent a lot of money on it and we just love the heating and cooling comfort it produces. The heat pump has one of the highest SEER ratings there are. This means it’s one of the most efficient pieces of HVAC technology made. So when I heard about thieves stealing from the HVAC cabinet I was sort of taken aback. But when I learned that these thieves were not even stealing the expensive HVAC technology contained in the HVAC cabinets, I was shocked. Shocked went to stunned once I found out that these criminals actually destroy the HVAC cabinet and the components to get to copper. And I’m not talking about a motherlode of copper by any stretch of the imagination. So they bypass all this really expensive stuff. But it’s not like their exactly surgical about it. This is the HVAC version of a smash and grab robbery. Thousand of dollars of HVAC technology is simply torn out, ruined and left in the yard. What a waste. And these people are getting just pennies on the dollar for their efforts. That’s why I now have a cage that fits over the HVAC cabinet and locks down to the concrete pad it sits on. Wow.

I’ve been working for the same company for right at 30 years.

That’s a long time to be in one place.

That’s especially true in this day and age. It’s happened for a lot of reasons and I’m glad I was with the company when it was small. I’ve watched a lot happen in that time. One thing I never imagined was being sent home to the air conditioning of my house to work for a year. That was not in the plan. However, the pandemic forced all of us out of the office and into the HVAC comfort and security of home. It took me some time to really get accustomed to working at home. But I finally did and it had it’s good points and bad. Each day, I tried to get out of the air conditioning in order to get outside and get good air and some sunshine. There were some days that I would get out of the heating and cooling three times a day for walks. This is something I’m going to continue to do now that the new office is open. Due to the large number of people who are staying home to work remotely, we have a new office. And man, is it ever something. I guess with the money the company is saving in space rental, they upped the amenities for sure. Like we have zone controlled HVAC in this office. I even have a thermostat that is right outside my office door. It’s really nice. But as much as I love this new office, I’m still going to get out of the air conditioning a few times a day for those walks I’ve added to my day.

Moving north for college was only supposed to be temporary.

The fact that I got a scholarship to a school up north was something that I couldn’t refuse.

But even at that age, I was less than excited about dealing with the winter. My dorm room was always so cold. My dad brought up a space heater but we weren’t allowed to have them. I spent those four years bundled up and going from one HVAC heating method to the next. Little did I know then that I would be spending the rest of my adult life dealing with heating during the winter. And honestly, until recently, that has been a losing battle. I met my husband at school and we decided to take jobs in the north. We ended up settling down and having a family up here as well. It was great in so many ways but the southern girl in me never got accustomed to a gas furnace or any other type of heating method. But fortunately, that all changed when we built our house once the kids were on their own. Our choice of HVAC heating and cooling is a geothermal heat pump. It’s a very efficient and long lasting source of heating and cooling. Yet that’s not what I love about the heating part. Our heat comes from radiant floor heating. That’s copper tubing under the floors that radiate heating upward. It’s the coziest, best heating I have ever enjoyed. And I get to go barefoot whenever I want all winter long. So the southern girl in me finally won one over winter and all this cold weather.
