Being in denial about how excruciating our corporation needed modern cooling equipment

I started a small Mexican restaurant two years ago downtown, and it’s been a real hit locally.

My customers rave about everything from my quesadillas to my huevos rancheros, but especially my carne asada tacos! However, ever since I bought the space for my restaurant, I knew I may eventually have to replace the HVAC system, because it was not in the best of shape.

I change the air filter often, so the air quality is good, and I even had customers comment on the fact that the air was fresh and breezy instead of all stuffy. At least the filter was doing an impeccable job, but some issues remained. I called an HVAC repairman, and he agreed to take a look at the system after closing time.. Part of me knew the problem, even though I was still hoping he would tell me something different. I wanted him to say that the HVAC equipment was somehow salvageable for at least another couple years, because I didn’t want to spend the money on a new one. Still, I had already been looking for a replacement; I just simply didn’t want to spend the money. Don’t get me wrong, business was good, but I just didn’t want to shell out the money. In the end though, as you would expect, the HVAC specialist knew that there was no salvaging the old equipment, and we began to take a look at alternatives. I actually settled on a very energy efficient and powerful new air conditioner!

A rodent in the a/c

I was finishing counting the money in the register when I saw Brooke.

I had finished preparing our orders for the evening.

Brooke is my best friend and biz partner, but we are opposites. Brooke would not know what to do with an oven, even with the most idiot proof recipe. On the other hand, I love baking so much that I turned it into a career. It’s a good thing Brooke takes care of just about everything except for the baking itself, so she is a good partner. Let me explain how she can be quirky though. There was a time she moved into my apartment because she claimed there was a rat in her air conditioner unit. Even after the a/c rep assured her that she had no vermin up there, and it was a mechanical issue making that strange noise, she was not pleased. Brooke went ahead and called a different a/c business. She actually wanted a second opinion on the matter! As I suspected, the second HVAC technician told her much the same as the first: there was no evil little rat, only a mechanical issue with her a/c. The whole time I was trying so hard to stifle a burst of laughter. In the end, the second HVAC specialist was able to fix the mechanical issue and teach Brooke a lot more about her HVAC system and all the various noises that it can make when it is not in good condition. Some years back, when she was looking for the best cooling equipment for her home, she decided that she wanted me to help her pick the right air conditioner for her home, because she was very indecisive. The two of us eventually sought the help of an a/c expert, And I really hope she has learned to trust them!

The perks of having a cooling specialist for a friend

My friend Stanley bought a beautiful piece of property in the country.

It has a creek running through it, and is sitting on a beautiful, forested hill-side.

He wanted to be far from civilization, but that has been a bit of a problem in some respects. Particularly, when he needed work done on his HVAC system. The few residents in the area get their cooling products from a/c dealers from the nearby town. This town is forty-five minutes from his house, so it is difficult to get a hold of a cooling specialist. Stanley called me the other week complaining that he was not enjoying summertime because his air conditioner wasn’t working very well at all! Due to my history of being an a/c expert, Stanley consults me when it comes to cooling technology dilemmas. He explained the few issues he could perceive about the unit. Stanley hadn’t yet called in for an a/c tune-up since his family moved into the house, which was well over a year. The one thing he had done in terms of a/c care was replace the dirty a/c filter. Stanley had yet to call an a/c rep to take care of everything else. Since I was planning to visit him that weekend, he requested that I bring my gear so that I could help him fix it. He was willing to wait two more days. When I eventually got there, we began working right after lunch. I was relieved that only routine maintenance was required to make everything as good as new. I took it upon myself to teach Stanley more about a/c so that he could take better care of the system.

cooling tech

No hope for the ancient heat pump

I called out a second HVAC technician, and after a series of questions and observations, he came to the same conclusion as the first one: I would definitely need a new system.

The air quality in my new Victorian home is less than stellar, and as a result, my family’s allergies have been flaring up over the past week since we’ve moved in. It is clear that many renovations need to be done in order for this house to be worth the cost. Obviously, the climate control system has a lot to do with the air quality, and was afraid I may need to replace it entirely since it was such an old system. The HVAC expert that I called out first told me the exact same thing, which left me broken-hearted. The tech concluded that no amount of a/c repair would revive the unit. He showed me a catalog of the available climate control units that his company sold, but I wasn’t convinced yet. I was not looking forward to buying a modern HVAC system, even though I had no choice. I called out a second HVAC technician, and after a series of questions and observations, he came to the same conclusion as the first one: I would definitely need a new system. I decided I had no choice but to drop the cash on a new heating and cooling unit, so I made sure that I picked the best one for the house. There was something else though. I needed to weatherproof this Victorian home, so that the HVAC unit would be energy efficient! It was just another project I needed to tackle to make sure that warm or cold air would remain in the house instead of seeping through cracks.

Decluttering for a modern heat pump

Thankfully, it was perfectly fine the way it was

I am terrible when it comes to hoarding things. Every year or two, I have to clean out the clutter to get rid of things I rarely or never use! Last year, decluttering was not just about creating more area and having a nicer looking house. It was also to scrape together cash from a garage sale. All of the money would go towards buying a new HVAC system. According to the cooling specialist I talked to at the a/c business, my system was due for an update and there was new cutting-edge technology that would heat and cool my home far more effectively and efficiently. I looked through the catalog and had the HVAC worker take a good look at my home, and I finally decided on one particular unit. The a/c installation process was a day’s work, and it took a few HVAC technicians working inside and outside my home. I really hoped that I would be saying goodbye to constant air conditioning repair. Choosing the proper size of the HVAC unit is important and this factors in the home’s geographical location, age, size, and the materials used in its construction. The HVAC technicians also analyzed my ductwork to see if it needed to be replaced. Thankfully, it was perfectly fine the way it was. By the way, the HVAC unit that I chose was a geothermal heat pump, because it would both heat and cool my home in a very efficient and cost-effective manner. I learned so much about HVAC during this process!

An a/c malfunction at the school gym

I never really fancied that I would be a gym instructor when I was younger.

Still, I appreciate the work, and it’s actually pretty enjoyable.

There are some perks as well. For one, the job helps me stay in shape. Sometimes, classes are outside, and other times they are in the gymnasium. One day, as I was getting ready for my next class, I noticed that the school gym was too hot, which did not bother me as much since sweating is the name of the game in gym class. After the class, however, I checked the thermostat, because it was hotter than ever. I decided that I would manually turn down the temperature, but when I went back to check later, I noticed that it returned to the same warm setting. Not too long ago, we had an a/c rep come to the school and make all the necessary calculations to install modern cooling equipment. The a/c expert had suggested a fancy cooling unit that used the best cooling technology and was more energy efficient. I got to watch him install this unit, so I was able to learn a few things about HVAC. I thought the system was great, so I was surprised by this blatant malfunction. I called the a/c business to send a tech for a/c repair. The business responded promptly, the cooling specialist conducted an a/c tune-up, and everything was working as well as it had before. It turns out we simply needed to schedule biannual maintenance to prevent such issues in the future. He also replaced the a/c filter, which was something that the school should have done close to a month ago. Since I oversaw both activities, I learned more about a/c.

Wrong settings on the cooling equipment almost ruined our son's cake

My son wanted to bake a birthday cake for his grandfather.

John has consistently loved everything to do with pastries.

An incident occurred when he iced the cake, and there was pretty much no room in the fridge to place it. He opted to leave the cake in the bedroom and set the temperature to 60. Our ductless mini-split a/c was a zoned system, so it was possible to change only a single one of the rooms. It was also on the upper floor, which we don’t frequently visit. With the haste of leaving the apartment for a delivery, he turned up instead of turned down the temperature. My son and I spent no more than twenty minutes on the delivery, since it was in the area. But when we returned, he saw the cake frosting looking all melted and he almost cried. I said we could fix the cake. He suggested we call a cooling specialist to fix whatever was wrong with the a/c idea because he thought it was faulty. After a close inspection of the control unit, I assured him that there would be no need for major repairs. The incident served as a reminder that it was actually time for an a/c tune-up. I called an HVAC technician and scheduled an appointment for Friday. My son is still worried that there’s something seriously wrong with the HVAC system, but I suggested that perhaps he had accidentally set the temperature way too high. He thought back and realized he had not been paying much attention and that was probably what happened.

We built a sauna in our basement.

Whenever my husband and I go away on vacation, we make sure we get a hotel that offers a sauna.

One year, we got a suite that had a personal sauna in the bathroom.

I loved being in that sauna. Whenever I got stressed, had sore muscles, or just wanted to get away, I sought ‌the sauna. My husband told me that if he had known all I wanted was the sauna when we were on vacation, he would’ve built one for me. Last week, he was doing some work in the basement. I walked down and jokingly asked him if he was finally going to build my sauna? He told me that if I won the sauna, we would either have to go on vacation, or I would need to go to the local gym. I was hoping he was kidding, but from the look on his face, I knew he wasn’t. He told me he was trying to build a room around the furnace. He wanted the furnace to have its own room, and that way we could have the rest of the basement as a playroom for the kids. I thought this was a great idea, but it wasn’t getting me into my sauna. That weekend, I went to the spa for a weekend of relaxation and being pampered. My sister and I had a great time, but we were both constantly wondering what our husbands were getting into since they were home alone. Never in my life did I expect to get home and find that he was putting a sauna in our basement. My sister and I couldn’t wait to try it out.

Local gym

They told me I had to clean the locker rooms.

I had gone to school and got it degree in nutrition.

  • I had also taken classes on how to be a personal trainer.

When I get out of school, I was told that the local gym was planning on hiring a nutritionist at a personal trainer, and I wanted one of those jobs. I went to the director who operated the gym and told him I had heard about their hiring plans. He asked for my credentials and I told him ‌I have a degree in nutrition and I was a certified personal trainer. I had all the information with me and I handed it to him. Two days later, he called me in for an interview. I walked into the gym, thinking I was going to have the job of my dreams. I would work with people who really needed my services and not just wanted to look pretty when well into their old age. Three days after my interview, I was to come into the gym for orientation. Not once was I told where my office was going to be so I could do my nutritional services. I wasn’t told how much I could charge, or if they charged extra for me to be a personal trainer. The only thing they showed me was where the mops and brooms were for the locker rooms. They told me that until they had everything established; they wanted me to clean the locker rooms and make sure I sanitized the showers and saunas after every use. I had become nothing more than a janitor until they decided it was time to put in an office for nutritional counseling, and let me do the job of a personal trainer.
