I don’t know if I’m having a midlife crisis or what, but I have decided that I’m going to move in with my long distance boyfriend next month.

I have been thinking about doing it for a long time, but I’ve just been putting it off for some reason. I want to be able to live comfortably, that’s for sure. I’m getting older and now is the time that I don’t want to have to worry about all kinds of stuff and that includes my HVAC system. I have been having a ton of issues with my HVAC system in the house where I’m living now. Honestly, the issues that I’m having with the gas furnace and the air conditioning system are driving me bonkers. I don’t want to have to deal with the HVAC company any more. I know that sounds terrible, but that’s just where I’m at in my life right now. I love my boyfriend, but I have always liked to have my own independence. I know that if I move in with him, that’s going to be a little bit different. My independence is going to be subdued just a little bit. That’s just something that happens whenever you move in with someone else. But at this point, the fact that my long distance boyfriend just installed a brand new high efficiency heating and cooling system goes a really long way. Whenever he told me that he had a whole home air purification system installed to run in tandem with the heating and cooling system, that’s what really won me over! Now I’m getting all packed up and ready to go. If I never have to deal with another HVAC company again, it will be fine with me!

It really sucked to not use the movie screen for the hottest part of the summer, but we had no choice but to stay inside with the air conditioning

Last winter, thanks in part to going stir crazy from the pandemic, my wife and I assembled a cool outdoor movie theater in our backyard. We already had a nice firepit and a sitting area, so we added a 10 by 15 foot screen along the security fence, and brought out a digital projector to show movies in the great outdoors. It was a huge hit, and we were out there several nights a week through the winter, watching fave films in front of a roaring fire. When the weather changed, so did movie nights, because although there was a source of heating, that firepit was useless against hot weather. If we wanted to keep watching movies under the stars ,we would need some kind of cooling system to keep us comfortable. It turns out there is no cheap and easy cooling equivalent to the fire pit, all the possible solutions are high tech and very expensive. There are portable air conditioners, and some very good ones, but sitting one outside is next to useless. You would basically have to sit right on top of the air vents just to feel the cooling, because it would dissipate in the open air so quickly. It really sucked to not use the movie screen for the hottest part of the summer, but we had no choice but to stay inside with the air conditioning. It is so hard to enjoy a movie while you are sweating in 95 degree weather and miserable humidity, so we’ll just have to wait until the weather starts cooling off naturally.

When I took apart my first air conditioner, I didn’t know that I was taking a glimpse into my future.

My father was the handyman for a local hotel at the time, and I would spend a lot of time at work with him.

We didn’t have money for a sitter ,or day care, so after school I just went to the hotel with him and carried his tools around. Sometimes I got to watch cartoons in the room as he did his repairs, so overall it wasn’t too bad. One of the tasks he hated the most was working on the air conditioners in the rooms, because it seemed like they broke down all the time. One day I told my dad that the maids should check the air filters in the AC units whenever they cleaned a room. He asked me why I said that, and I replied that the main cause of the air conditioners overheating was due to clogged up air filters. If the maids checked and changed the air filters regularly, then there wouldn’t be so much building up dust and dirt, and there would be fewer AC problems. My dad passed the air filter idea on to the management, who implemented it and gave my dad a raise! Since the air filter idea had been mine, he took me out for ice cream, and told me that he wanted to start teaching me a lot more about HVAC systems. He knew I was smart, and that learning the HVAC trade would give me a good future.

Usually I do a full and deep cleaning of my house once or twice a year.

Some people call it Spring Cleaning, but I don’t have a set time of the year to do it, just when the mood strikes me.

This year was a little different, because I had actually skipped doing it last year. With all the extra time I had due to the pandemic, I could have easily found the time, but I spent about 18 months feeling lethargic so it never happened. After over 2 years of building, I found that my house was a filthy mess, everywhere from the baseboards to the air vents. The air vents were so dirty that I got my tools to remove them entirely and blast them with the hose in the front yard. Once they were off, I had my first clear view into the ductwork of the house, and it was only then I realized how dirty they had gotten. In all my years, in all the places I had lived, I had never gotten my ductwork cleaned before. Seeing firsthand how much grime, dust, and hair can build up in an air duct over the years is a sobering and disturbing sight. I knew that left to my own devices I could never get the ductwork properly cleaned myself, I had to call for some professional help. Since I was having an HVAC tech come to the house anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to get a full inspection of the system and see if there was anything else I had overlooked.

A few years ago a tornado tore through this neighborhood.

• The night before I heard the winds and the rain, but fell asleep in front of the TV and didn’t notice anything major happening.

The next morning I woke up and took the dog for a walk, at which point I saw that several houses on my street had been utterly destroyed. I could clearly see the path the twister had taken, and thankfully it had gone down the other side of the street, and not my side. It wasn’t until later that day when I went out in the backyard when I saw the smashed air conditioner. To be clear, it was not mine — I ran over to my air handler and found it none the worse for wear. In the middle of the yard was someone else’s air conditioner, and it looked like it had fallen from a great height, and smashed to pieces on the ground. How deeply asleep was I that I didn’t hear this massive HVAC unit plowing into my yard? It wasn’t until later I realized how lucky I was, because that air conditioner was just 12 feet away from hitting my house! I am not a scientist, but I believe that such a massive air conditioner coming down from such a height would easily tear through my roof and possibly kill whoever was under that roof! I would come to find out that the air conditioner belonged to a man named Ed, who lived about three miles from me. I’m glad the damage wasn’t worse!

I was lucky to have cool roommates when the lockdown hit.

We had a span of a few months where we literally could go nowhere, and were totally homebound.

If I had been trapped with another group of guys, it might have been torturous, but we managed to make the most of it. It helped that we were all really into smoking weed and watching movies, because that was about all we could do. I had the idea to set up a makeshift movie screen in the backyard, so we could smoke and watch movies under the stars. When it got cold, we dragged the old space heater outside and used it as a footrest, but when it got too hot there was little we could do. First of all we didn’t have a small air conditioner, and even if we did, sitting it outside probably wouldn’t make much difference to the heat and humidity. Also, there is a huge difference that I have seen in the volume levels of heaters as opposed to cooling units. A space heater might hum a little bit, but it will never be loud enough to drown out a movie. Can you imagine one of those hotel sized air conditioners roaring away while we were trying to watch a movie? Even if it worked at cooling us off, we wouldn’t be able to hear anything else. Alas, outdoor movie nights only happen when it gets cold, and the rest of the time we stay in the boring old living room with the central air conditioning.

In what has to be the weirdest timing in history, I was laid off from my job three weeks before the COVID pandemic shut them down.

To be honest it really helped to motivate me, because although the two events were unrelated, it still felt like revenge being exacted on the company who fired me.

I set up an office in the spare bedroom of my home and got right to work in building a new client base and finding new distributors to represent. I had worked in the marketing office of a major HVAC company, and now was determined to use my skills to help the competitors of my old bosses. I didn’t want to go big, though, and decided that if I worked for another major HVAC company I would get treated the same as before. I started approaching locally owned and operated HVAC companies instead, because I thought that it would be good to help the “little guys.”The problem the smaller HVAC companies have is reach and exposure, because they don’t have the budget for major marketing campaigns. I scaled down my approach and focused on social media, so I could work with small HVAC companies in a dozen different areas, so that none of them would be in competition with one another. Instead of one big client now I have a dozen smaller clients, and my bottom line has improved, as well as the income for the HVAC companies I work for. We may not put the major HVAC companies out of business, but we are still making great strides toward success.

I thought I could handle everything by myself, I really did.

It was the first time I had ever owned my own house, and I was keen on being a jack of all trades. For the first few months I was great about staying on top of all the regular maintenance and up[keep for the place. I would cut the grass, clean the gutter, opower wash the driveway, and test the breaker box to make sure all the fuses were good. Then I came to realize that I couldn’t keep up with everything, because with all I had done, I had completely neglected the HVAC system. I had not forgotten to change the air filter, or to check the thermostat regularly to make sure it was on point, but beyond that I never felt like the system needed attention. One day the AC would not turn on, and it was only then I realized the error of my ways. Right after that, I realized that I didn’t know how to take care of an HVAC system in the first place! Beyond air filters and fresh batteries in the thermostat, what else could I really do? HVAC systems require special training, but of course I am hard headed so I still thought I could handle it myself. I spent that entire night crouched over my computer, watching dozens of videos on Youtube about basic HVAC system maintenance, and walked away more confused than ever. I eventually called an HVAC tech for a service call, because something you have to leave to the professionals.

This part of the country is known for hurricanes, not for twisters.

Every year the state gets pounded with several massive storm fronts, causing property damage to varying degrees.

Last year was my first encounter with a tornado, however, and I have to say it’s a lot more terrifying to witness. I was at home, late at night, and the power went out. I didn’t even have time to get up from my chair when I heard what sounded like a locomotive engine, passing right over the house. I heard a metallic shredding sound, and then the winds settled down and the noise went away. A few moments later the power came back on, but the air conditioning did not. I was too nervous to go outside, so I waited out the rest of the night without my air conditioning. When the sun came up, I heard a lot of people outside making a fuss over their damage, and I stepped out back to see how badly damaged my AC unit was. On the positive side, it was not damaged, but on the negative side, the air handling unit for my central HVAC system was entirely gone. The air conditioner had been plucked off of the cement slab to which it had been bolted, and taken away to Oz, I guess! I walked up and down the street, talking to folks and finding out how bad their damage was, and although I kept my eye out for my air conditioner, I never found it. What happened to the AC unit, I will never know.

I don’t know how I am ever going to get any sleep at night.

My house is always so cold.

I have come to learn that my house is always cold because my air conditioning system is always on blast. You mean Wonder why I don’t do anything about my AC being on blast but it is because I have learned the hard way that is just the way my air conditioning system is. I have had Heating and cooling technicians come out. I’m trying to fix it but it doesn’t do anything. So I’m stuck trying to fix my heating and AC system that doesn’t work. As a result of this it is nearly impossible for me to get any sleep and I will find myself talking and turning in bed all night and I do not know what to do to stop it. The only thing that I have done recently in an attempt to try to stop this is to buy a space heater. The space heater elves come back and my heater and this is the only way that I can get some sleep at night but it is still not as good as I would like it to be. I’m going to have another heating and cooling specialist come out to my home to take a look at my heater. What a great relief when the heating and AC special finally did arrive at my home to take a look at my heating and cooling system. By this time I had been throwing on a whole bunch of blankets and was trying to warn myself as much as possible. Thankfully the heating and cooling guy got straight to work out looking at and diagnosing the problem with my heater. I was happy when the repair job did not take nearly as long as I thought it would and it was fixed in only an hour.
