There’s this woman I noticed frequently in my favorite coffee shop for the past couple of weeks. Every morning, I would see her as I stopped by for a pastry and some morning joe. I never really worked up the courage to say something to her until recently. On this fateful day, I overheard her talking to her friend about some sort of problem with her air conditioner. As she continued to describe the problem to her friend, I walked up and introduced myself. I apologized for eavesdropping on her conversation, but then, I asserted that I was interested in helping her because I was an HVAC repairman. I knew it was a lie, but I just needed to say something to try and grab her attention. The truth is, I’m a novice when it comes to HVAC. I’ve seen an air conditioning repairman at work before, and I’ve done a little bit of research on my own about HVAC maintenance. I don’t think it did much to prepare me for helping this woman with her problem, but I was a man on a mission. I set out to learn more about a/c and had a decent amount of time to learn more. I was really lucky to have a friend in the HVAC business. I called him and asked endless questions. When he started explaining the various things that can go wrong with air conditioners and the different types of cooling equipment, I started worrying that I would not be able to pull it off. I tried to take notes and listen intently, but the truth is I was no more prepared after the conversation than I was before! My friend realized there was a special reason why I was asking all these questions. When he found out why, he decided to help me with my situation. When the day came, he discovered that she only needed an a/c tune-up. I also got her number, and we’ve been dating ever since.
