Gill’s aunt was a stickler on the rules of etiquette for women. If Gill was walking across the yard, her aunt would tell her to straighten up her head and quit looking for Nichols. If Gill was not sitting on the edge of her seat with her back straight, her aunt would push her physically to the front of the seat and command Gill to sit up straight. One afternoon Gill was kneeling outside slumped over, and her aunt demanded she sit up straight. Gill told her it was too hot, and she was dripping with sweat and not worried about posture. Gill’s aunt replied that women perspire, and critters sweat. Gill got irritated. Gill told her that if she had a proper air conditioning in the house, she wouldn’t have to worry about dripping with sweat or perspiring. Gill could just turn up the control component and be comfortable like all her friends. Her aunt proceeded to say how ungrateful Gill was for everything she had and that Gill needed to start being a respectful young lady. The air conditioning system at home broke down many weeks ago, but since there wasn’t enough money to make the repairs right away, they had to live without AC.
