Steadily upgrading apartments

Between graduating college and buying my own home, I spent five years renting various apartments.

I started out with very little money, struggling to come up with the security deposit and to pay the rent.

My first apartment was extremely small and rundown. It was located in a sketchy neighborhood, and I couldn’t wait to get out of there. The floors were slanted, the windows painted shut and none of the appliances worked properly. Despite the limited square footage, heating and cooling cost me a fortune. The door didn’t lock securely and someone broke in while I was out for the evening and stole my laptop. As soon as I could afford it, I moved into a nicer apartment. This one was actually the ground floor of an older house that had been converted into rental apartments. I liked having hardwood floors, big windows, high ceilings and a wide front porch. The drawbacks of an old house are not enough power outlets, ineffective heating, no air conditioning and no off-street parking. I felt safe there but was still anxious to upgrade to a better apartment. Once I started making more money, I moved into an apartment complex with all of the conveniences and amenities. It was a huge building and property with eight floors and multiple elevators. Within my apartment I had a washer and dryer, stainless steel appliances, two full bathrooms, zone control and a balcony overlooking the courtyard. I had access to a fitness room, giant swimming pool, hot tub and barbecue grills. It was expensive and noisy, but I really enjoyed living there.
